Hawks Finish Preseason With 6-3 Win Over Seattle

Oliver Bjorkstrand had four points as the Portland Winterhawks picked up a 6-3 preseason win Saturday afternoon against the Seattle Thunderbirds in a game played in Kennewick, WA.

It was the Hawks’ final preseason game, as they finish with a 4-1 record.

After Seattle’s Brendan Rouse opened the scoring 9:42 into the game, Bjorkstrand responded with two goals to give Portland a 2-1 lead going into the second period.

The Hawks kept the offense rolling in the second with three straight power play goals. It began when defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon made it 3-1 at the 9:00 mark, then Nic Petan and Seth Jones each scored with a man advantage to give Portland a 5-1 lead. Seattle’s Seth Swenson got one back before the end of the second to make the score 5-2 going into the third.

Petan scored his second of the game at the 12:48 mark of the third to make it 6-2, and the Thunderbirds’ Roberts Lipsbergs rounded out the scoring at the 14:10 mark as the Hawks finished with the 6-3 win.

The Hawks finished 3-5 on the power play, and a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill.

Portland split the goaltending duties between Brendan Jensen and Jarrod Schamerhorn. Jensen stopped 10 of 11 shots, while Schamerhorn made 14 saves on 16 shots.

Seattle’s Daniel Cotton made 16 saves on 19 shots during his half of the game, while Danny Mumuagh stopped 13 of 16 shots during his time in goal.

With his four points Saturday, Bjorkstrand stands as the team’s leading scorer with the preseason complete, as he posted four goals and three assists for seven points in four appearances. Jones, Ty Rattie and Dominic Turgeon each had five points in preseason play.

The regular season gets underway Friday, September 21 when the Hawks host Seattle at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden. Before the game the team will raise the 2012 Western Conference championship banner.
