Hawks Win 6-1 in PG Saturday

The Portland Winterhawks (51-9-1-2) wrapped up a back-to-back set in Prince George Saturday with a 6-1 win over the Cougars (18-36-2-6).

The win gives Portland 105 points on the season, the fifth-highest total in franchise history, with nine games still to play.

Like they did in a 6-2 win over the Cougars last night, the Hawks raced out to a 3-0 first period lead. Portland opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the game on a goal by Oliver Bjorkstrand. The Hawks then got a pair of power play goals just over three minutes apart from Brendan Leipsic to take a 3-0 lead 7:43 into the game. The Cougars then made a goaltending change, replacing starter Brett Zarowny with Mac Engel.

It remained 3-0 until the 5:04 mark of the second, when Portland’s Presten Kopeck scored his 10th of the season to make it 4-0. The Hawks then took a five-goal lead when Ty Rattie scored his 38th at the 15:50 mark. The Cougars got on the board at the 19:20 mark with a power play goal from Chase Witala to make it 5-1 going into the third.

Rattie notched his second of the game 5:08 into the third to give the Hawks a 6-1 lead that would stand as the final.

Mac Carruth earned his 28th win of the season with 32 saves on 33 shots. Zarowny allowed three goals on 10 shots in the first period before being replaced, with Engel finishing with 18 saves on 21 shots.

With two goals and an assist, Leipsic leads the league with 44 goals and 110 points, while Nic Petan, who had two assists Saturday, is second in both categories with 43 goals and 106 points. Rattie is fourth in league scoring with 94 points, one behind Colin Smith of the Kamloops Blazers for third.

Portland was 2-5 on the power play, and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

The Hawks are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Kennewick, WA for a game against the Tri-City Americans.
