Hawks Win Game 2 5-1; Even Series at 1-1

The Portland Winterhawks won Game 2 of the WHL Final 5-1 over the Edmonton Oil Kings Friday to even the series at 1-1.

Brendan Leipsic and Sven Bartschi each scored twice in the win, while Mac Carruth stopped 38 of 39 shots.

The Hawks scored the only goal of the first period at the 2:37 mark when Brendan Leipsic took a pass from Brad Ross on a two-on-one and beat Edmonton netminder Laurent Brossoit to take a 1-0 lead into the second period.

Leipsic struck again 9:20 into the second when he intercepted a pass in the offensive zone and beat Brossoit to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. They made it 3-0 on a power play at the 10:28 mark when Troy Rutkowski fed Sven Bartschi with a terrific pass, who fired a one-timer past Brossoit for his ninth of the playoffs.

The Hawks added one more in the second when Taylor Peters scored his first of the playoffs at the 18:38 mark to give Portland a 4-0 lead going into the third period.

Edmonton got on the board at the 4:44 mark of the third when Kristians Pelss scored to cut Portland’s lead to 4-1. But that would be as close as they’d get, and Bartschi added a late empty net goal to give the Hawks the 5-1 win to even the series.

The Hawks were 1-4 on the power play and a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill.

Game 3 is set for Sunday at 6 p.m. back in Portland at the Rose Garden.
