Hawks Win Sixth Straight With 5-2 Win Over Everett

The Portland Winterhawks (10-3-1-0) won their sixth straight as they exploded for four second period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Everett Silvertips (6-9-0-2) Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Hawks fired 15 shots at Everett netminder Austin Lotz in the first period, but it was the Silvertips who scored the lone goal of the frame on a tally by Kohl Bauml at the 8:41 mark to take a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

From there the Hawks exploded for four goals in the second period, beginning 3:38 into the frame when Chase De Leo scored on a wrist shot from the slot for his sixth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Midway through the period the Hawks struck for two goals in a span of 49 seconds to make it 3-1. First it was Brendan Leipsic taking a nice feed from Nic Petan and going high over Lotz for his 50th career goal, followed quickly by Oliver Bjorkstrand scoring to give Portland a two-goal lead.

The Hawks kept pressing, and at the 13:12 mark defenseman Seth Jones stickhandled through several Silvertips and rifled a shot past Lotz to make it 4-1. The Silvertips got one back at the 14:30 mark on a goal by Ty Mappin to make it 4-2, which would remain the score going into the third period.

Ty Rattie extended Portland’s lead when he scored his ninth of the season to make it 5-2 at the 10:20 mark of the third period, which rounded out the scoring.

Brendan Burke earned the win in net for the Hawks, stopping 22 of Everett’s 24 shots. Lotz took the loss for the Silvertips, with 40 saves on 45 Portland shots.

The Hawks are back in action with back-to-back games Friday and Saturday against the Victoria Royals. Both games will be at the Rose Garden and will begin at 7 p.m.
