Taylor Leier Wins it in the Shootout Friday in 6-5 Victory

Taylor Leier scored in the sixth round of a shootout to give the Portland Winterhawks (12-7-1-1) a dramatic 6-5 win over the Spokane Chiefs (9-4-0-2) Friday at the Rose Garden.

The Winterhawks forced overtime after Brad Ross scored with 40.5 seconds to go in regulation to tie the game at 5-5, the fifth tie of the game.

Spokane opened the scoring 3:11 into the game on a goal by Mike Aviani, but the Hawks came back at the 10:07 mark when Taylor Peters scored a shorthanded goal that went in off a Chiefs defender to even the game at 1-1. Spokane regained the lead at the 13:36 mark on a power play goal from Malek Karus to make it 2-1, which would remain the score going into the second period.

Portland evened the game 2:55 into the second when Brad Ross scored a power play goal to tie the game at 2-2. The Chiefs went ahead 3-2 at the 8:30 mark when Steven Kuhn scored a power play goal, but for the third time the Hawks would tie the game when Ty Rattie scored a power play goal at the 11:16 mark to even the game at 3-3. Less than a minute later Darren Kramer scored for Spokane to give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead, which they took into the third period.

The Hawks tied the game for a fourth time at the 9:42 mark of the third when Rattie scored his second power play goal of the night to make it 4-4, but less than a minute later Spokane’s Connor Chartier replied to give the Chiefs a 5-4 lead. It would remain 5-4 until there were 40.5 seconds left in regulation, when Brad Ross scored his second of the night to tie the game at 5-5 and force overtime, the fifth tie of the game.

After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to a shootout. The shootout went to six rounds, with Leier ending it with his winner.

Portland’s power play was potent once again tonight, scoring three times in six attempts.

Tonight’s game was Portland’s first home game in 24 days, after the team played nine straight games on the road. The Hawks and Chiefs meet again tomorrow night in a special 5 p.m. start time at the Rose Garden.
