Dan Folwick Steps Down As P.A. Announcer

After nearly 20 years behind the microphone at Winterhawks games, Public Address Announcer Dan Folwick is stepping down from the position.

“As much as I love the Winterhawks, I have a son who returns from Iraq in September and a 14-month old granddaughter who needs to be taught the finer points of this great game. I can’t do that from behind the microphone. Time with my family has become so very important in the last year,” said Folwick. “It was an incredibly difficult decision, but I feel it’s time. I have nothing but great memories and I wish the organization the best.”

Much like Dean “Scooter” Vrooman, who has continued his involvement with the Winterhawks since stepping down as the play-by-play announcer, Folwick will maintain a presence with the organization, making appearances at team functions and community events, and working with the newly-formed Winterhawks Alumni Association.

“Dan has been a great ambassador for the Winterhawks, and we understand his decision and wish him nothing but the best,” said Portland Winterhawks President Doug Piper. “While Dan will no longer be working the games, he will always be part of the Winterhawks family and we’re looking forward to his continued participation in team events.”

In his 18 years behind the microphone, Folwick was part of 623 regular season games, which accounts for over half the home games in team history, and 57 playoff games.

“The people I have associated with during the games have become a second family. I will miss some of the conversations with players the most,” added Folwick. “I’m heartened that the Winterhawks are again showing the class and professionalism that was once the standard that set Portland apart in junior hockey. I’m glad that I will continue to be a part of the organization.”

In addition to his public address duties, Folwick also oversaw the anthem singer program and even sang the national anthem at many games. The Winterhawks will begin the search for his replacement immediately.
